The Salem Seventh Day Baptist Church, established in 1792, has for over 200 years been an integral part of the community. Its earliest members founded the town and the college (university). Involvement in education and community service continue along with a strong tradition of choral music. The church sponsors Randolph Terrace
Apartments, a community housing development, and is an active member of the Seventh Day Baptist General Conference, USA and Canada. Nestled in the Appalachian foothills, Salem is best known for Salem International University, a center for cross-cultural studies. Salem's traditional small town welcome includes an invitation to share the mountain pioneer heritage at its living-history museum known as Fort New Salem, to revel in the folk life of the annual Apple Butter Festival or to hike or bike the "rail trail". Like other Baptists, Seventh Day Baptists trace their roots to 16th century England, and since that time have worshipped on the Sabbath (Saturday), the seventh day of the week. The first American church was established in Newport, Rhode Island in 1671. Today there are churches across the country and in eighteen nations.
OUR MISSION
The Salem Seventh Day Baptist Church is called to proclaim and expand the Kingdom of God by creating programs that teach God's children the basic principles of Christian living, strengthen the family as a unit of Christian community, embrace all people as part of the larger family of God, and encourage Sabbath observance as a model for spiritual development, healing, and relationship building.
